The University of Munich hosts the second largest medical faculty and university hospital in Germany. The Medizinische Klinik and Poliklinik IV have two main subjects: endocrinology and nephrology with extensive clinical and experimental research activities in the fields of endocrinology, diabetes and kidney disease.
The Kidney Research Institute`s research focus is the molecular mechanisms of kidney injury and repair. It applies translational science to develop novel therapies for patients with acute kidney injury or chronic kidney disease. The institute is equipped for all sorts of experiments using animal models of kidney disease. This includes independent animal facility, microsurgery facility, histology laboratory, and equipment for light, fluorescence, confocal, and electron microscopy.
As part of the NEPHSTROM consortium, LMU will perform preclinical studies with Orbsen`s stromal cells in a mouse model of accelerated and advanced nephropathy of type 2 diabetes.
